It is with much sadness we report that George Illingworth passed away peacefully on 4th January 2008 after a long illness.  George played for Clitheroe Chess Club from the mid 1990s.  He captained the B team to several ELCA league division 3 triumphs as well as helping the A team win division 2 twice.  The 2005/06 season was one of his best where he scored 10.5/16 - 2 points more than any other player at the club.  He also did a lot of taxiing for the club too.

George had a lively, attacking style of chess.  The King's Gambit and Benko Gambit were favourites of his.  He also had a particular fondness for the old notation!

He will always be remembered for his warm personality and his enthusiam for the game.
