Patrick English  1922 – 2010.

East Lancashire Chess Association are sorry to hear of the death of Rawtenstall Chess Club stalwart Patrick English who died on the 2nd February 2010, aged 87.

Patrick became a member of Rossendale Chess Club in 1981 and has for nearly 30 years been an active member of the club.

For many years during the 1980’s and 1990’s he was the treasurer and “B” team captain.  When Rossendale and Waterfoot Chess Clubs amalgamated 10 years ago to form Rawtenstall Chess Club, Patrick was the senior member of the club and was elected President, a position he held until his death.

Patrick was a very active player for the club, regularly turning out for one of the teams until about 18 months ago, when due to failing health he has played less frequently.  Nevertheless, in spite of this, he still managed to play in the first 3 matches of this season for the “B” team.

Patrick English will be sadly missed at Rawtenstall Chess Club and by the many other players in the League who knew him so well.
